Reviving the Dumfries Carnival: A Community Effort
In a heartwarming endeavor to restore the Dumfries Carnival, cherished by locals and visitors alike, organizers from the Big Burns Supper have taken the initiative to raise funds through various creative events. Scheduled for June 21st at 70 High Street in Dumfries, their series of fundraising activities promises to infuse the community with joy while collecting vital support needed to meet the campaign's £8,000 goal.
Festivities That Bring the Community Together
The day will unfold with a delightful pop-up Vintage Café serving exquisite Afternoon Teas for just £7.50, offering a perfect setting for friends and families to connect over delicious treats. The cheerful volunteers will ensure every guest leaves with not just their taste buds satisfied, but their spirits lifted.
In addition to the café, families are invited to enjoy Musical Bingo, an exciting way to engage the community while having fun together. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the plant and book swap, promoting sustainability and creativity within the local area.
The Impact of Your Support
The t-shirts designed by local artist Russell Milligan, part of the “Love Dumfries” collection, will also be available for purchase on fundraising day. Each t-shirt sold represents a contribution toward supporting the carnival and facilitating over 2,500 children to participate in lantern-making workshops across more than 25 schools within the community.
Justin Hyslop, the newly elected Chair of the voluntary board for Big Burns Supper, has emphasized the importance of this event. “We want to keep the Dumfries Carnival free for everyone in our community,” he stated, acknowledging the challenges of relying on community support to cover costs such as road closures, materials, and venues.
Looking Ahead to Carnival 2026
Dumfries Carnival is set to make its grand return from January 15th to 19th, 2026. This year promises not just festivities, but also the continuation of the Northern Lights program, which previously illuminated Dumfries buildings, captivating audiences with its vibrant projections and artistic displays. Therefore, the support raised will play a crucial role in making this vision a reality.
